Strange Possession at Viner Sound

"Strange Possession at Viner Sound" unfolds through seven stories inspired by real experiences. In 1996, anchored in Viner Sound, the author felt a mysterious presence, sparking a tale of six interconnected lives: two half-breeds, Matti Wilson and Bessie David; Chief Joseph of the Koeksotenok; Shaman Caring-well; and Lad and Jojo, trapped spirits from WWII. Matti, possessed by Jojo's unsettled spirit, seeks to free him for reincarnation. The novel interweaves their stories, exploring themes of possession and redemption. Self-published in 2012, it supports the author's charities.

About the Author: Robin Percival Smith
Robin Percival Smith was born in London and educated in England at St John’s School, Leatherhead, Surrey. After school he was drafted into the army for national service. He was selected for officer training in the Royal Artillery and posted to Hong Kong in the 34th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. After finishing service he was accepted by Gonville and Caius College (1950), Cambridge, to study medicine. He continued his clinical studies at The Westminster Hospital Medical School in London and in 1956 graduated MB Bchir.

In 1958 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and immigrated to Canada. He was posted to 442 Search and Rescue Squadron in Vancouver. In 1961 he went into private practice in Richmond, BC. In 1971 he was appointed Staff Physician at the Student Health Service of the University of British Columbia. Because of his interest in Women’s Health, he was invited to be an investigator on The Canadian Committee for Fertility Research and later a member of that committee. He developed a research interest in the development of Post Coital Contraception and other women’s health issues. In 1976 he was a founder member of the Canadian Andrology Society and was appointed a member of the WHO Task Force on Male Fertility Control, Clinical Trials Division. In 1981 he was appointed Director of Student Health and in 1989 retired from the university.

After retirement he pursued his passion for single handed sailing in his vessel Tremethick II on the west coast of Canada and Alaska. He wrote two books, a novel, A Tale of Whales(under Robin Kingsley), and a biography, Captain McNeill and his Wife the Nishga Chief. Both these books as well as, Strange Possession at Viner Sound are set on the west coast of Canada.
I have written about seven stories that I put away and have occasionally revised. One story started when I was anchored alone in Viner Sound in 1996. I felt a presence on board that set off my imagination. The book contains the stories of six lives. Two half breeds, Matti Wilson (part Finish and part Indian) and Bessie David (part Kwakuutl Indian and part Chinese). Chief Joseph of the Koeksotenok in the village of Gwayasdums. Shaman Caring-well in the village (cousin of Matti) and shaman to Chief Bell of the Tsawatenok. Lad and Jojo (sons of Chief Bell) held captive at a secret Japanese radio base in Viner Sound during WWII and died there. Jojo had not been given the rites at burial that would send him to Transformer for reincarnation and his spirit is trapped in Viner Sound. Jojo's spirit possesses Matti and shows him how the boys died at the radio base. He asks Matti for assistance in releasing his spirit for passage to Transformer so that he can be reincarnated. The lives of these main characters are interwoven in the novel's narrative.

The idea of spiritual possession was reinforced in 2002, when a Haida woman told me about her possession by the bad spirit of Hot Spring Island in the Gwai Hanas Park on the Queen Charlotte Islands. In 2012 I decided to self-publish, Strange Possesion at Viner Sound, to raise funds for my charities.
