About the Author: James Scott Lafon
James Scott LaFon has both lived in and visited California in the past but now reservedly calls New Mexico home. He taught Special Education in the New Mexico Public Schools, worked construction for years, spent four years in the United States Coast Guard and a year as an Albuquerque Police Department dispatcher. He likes to travel (scotttreks.com) and posts travel videos on YouTube (On the Road in New Mexico). When he takes a writing break he plays good golf some days, wails jazz standards on his alto saxophone, and never touches a surfboard even though he constantly dreams about the ocean.

In writing this first novel, Scott fell in love with all the characters, their lives, and their entourage. He would love to see a mover and shaker find humor and drama in this literary effort and take it to places its author hasn’t yet imagined.
"Surf's Up in the City of Angels" is a captivating tale set against the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles, where the city's eclectic mix of characters find themselves navigating the turbulent waters of life. The story centers around a diverse group of individuals, each with their own unique struggles and aspirations, who come together in a "Generic Therapy Group" to confront their personal demons and pursue their dreams.

From Dr. Richard Schmidt, a psychotherapist who balances his professional duties with his love for surfing, to Monique, a hairstylist with aspirations in the adult film industry, the characters' lives intertwine in unexpected ways. The narrative takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through therapy sessions, art galleries, and even a trip to Portugal for a big wave surfing competition.

As the characters strive to "get right with the world," they encounter a series of surprising and transformative events. These include Dr. Schmidt and Veronika's surfing adventure in Nazare, Portugal, Rusty Doors' comedic rise in Las Vegas with his parrot Captain Kidd, and Marty Marvel's political ambitions in Los Angeles. The book offers a humorous yet poignant exploration of human resilience, ambition, and the quest for fulfillment.
