Jamala Rogers' fascination with words began at an early age. An avid reader, she soon became an enthusiastic, young writer. By the age of eight years old, she was writing poetry and short stories. As her awareness of injustices and inequities increased, the focus of her writings became more political. She soon realized the power of the written word and its undeniable impact in working for social justice change.

Jamala has a B.A. in English and Education and M.Ed. in Curriculum Instruction. But she believes that it has been the informal education and experiences that have truly shaped her worldview. For that, Jamala could hold a PhD in the struggle for human development.

Jamala is a devoted community organizer, a respected writer and a knowledgeable speaker. She is active in many organizations who share her vision for a just and humane world. Jamala has received numerous awards for untiring service to her community. Her important human rights work spans over forty years.
