The Ultimate Pursuit

What started as a single indulgence spiraled into a 15-year nightmare of drugs, crime, and imprisonment. Carl's life in the grip of heroin and cocaine led him to homelessness and despair, sharing his darkest moments from maximum-security confinement. He thought he was beyond redemption until an old friend introduced him to Teen Challenge, a Christian program promising a new path. About the Author: Carl D. Smith
The Reverend Carl Smith, ordained as a minister with the Evangelical Church Alliance, struggled through years of addiction, incarceration and homelessness
as a young man. A California boy who enlisted in the Navy in his teens, Carl became addicted to heroin while he was stationed in Guam. Though addiction shattered his early life, and many felt he had no hope or future, in 1991 Carl found his way into a Teen Challenge center where he discovered a new life and a Kingdom purpose. After graduating from the Teen Challenge Ministry Institute in 1994, Carl saw God work through him and the other crew members of Friend Ship's pride and joy, "The Spirit of Grace", an ex-Navy ship, belonging to the world wide humanitarian/missionary organization called "Friendships".

For the last thirteen years, Carl has been a minister at San Diego Teen Challenge, taught Bible classes and counseled men struggling with addictions. Carl is happiest when he is preaching to men in the drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, speaking to the youth in Juvenile Hall or participating in local outreaches in the community.

He is married to Helen, a Swedish-born missionary, and they have a beautiful daughter named Moa. Carl is living proof that Jesus can and does change lives. Carl and his family attend The Rock Church in San Diego, where he is involved with their prison ministry.
After high school graduation, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was assigned to Guam and there in a dorm found himself being offered heroin for the first time. After multiple refusals to get high, he gave in once, which launched a 15-year downward spiral in his life. Carl became entrenched in the drug world as a heroin and cocaine user, smuggling drugs and living only for his next fix.

Personal experiences are brought to life from inside his maximum-security prison. "Drugs took me where I did not want to go, made me stay there longer than I wanted to stay, demanding more of me than I wanted to give." He communicates what it felt like to be homeless, hopeless, and a convict lost on the very streets he grew up on. He did not care whether he lived or died... but a much higher power did.

When all hope was lost and it looked as if he would die a dope fiend, an old friend wrote him in a letter while in prison about a Christian program called Teen Challenge. Here he would be loved, taught the Bible, and how to live a life free from drugs and the horrible life he knew. This poignant, true-life story will grip your heart as you journey with a man on The Ultimate Pursuit.
