Four friends—George, William Samuel Harris, Montmorency (the dog), and the narrator—decide they're unwell, plagued by various ailments, and in desperate need of a vacation. After a lively discussion in the narrator's room, where they conclude they're overworked, they decide against a sea voyage due to its unpredictability. George suggests a river trip instead. Despite Montmorency's objection, the majority rules for a leisurely journey down the river, promising relaxation and adventure.
