Stan Corey has been a Certified Financial Planner Professional (CFP), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA) and has worked with many individuals, families, and small businesses for almost forty years. He has retired from the day-to-day activity of providing financial advisory services but continues to consult in specialized areas, such as assisting clients with estate settlements, a financial advocate in divorce cases working with family law attorneys, speaking at various professional conferences, and plans to continue writing about current financial issues.
Stan was born in New York City and grew up in Stony Brook on Long Island. After graduating from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1971, he joined the navy and was stationed at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and Patuxent Naval Air Station hospital, both in Maryland. Although he never served on a ship, since childhood, Stan has been an avid sailor, and navigating the seas has been his lifelong passion. He has sailed most of the East Coast, as well as to Bermuda. For over twenty years, he competed in numerous sailing club and international regattas as skipper, helmsman, and tactician on a variety of boats from fifteen feet to sixty feet. He won the Naval District of Washington sailing championship in 1974 and became an ocean racing coach for the Naval Academy after his honorable discharge in 1976.
Stan is a sought-after financial expert who regularly provides commentary at national conferences, in print and online publications, and on TV. He is author of a teaching novel, The Divorce Dance. He has appeared in USA Today, Working Women magazine, MONEY, Good Housekeeping, and Northern Virginia magazine and is a regular contributor to a women’s retirement blog, Sixty and Me. For twenty years, he published the News and Views, a quarterly newsletter covering financial topics; and he co-wrote and taught the Economic Issues in Divorce curriculum, which is a required course for mediator certification through Northern Virginia Mediation Services (NVMS). Stan works closely with foremost family law firms in Northern Virginia providing financial expertise and serves as an expert witness and financial advocate for the financially less well informed. As a “financial translator,” he has earned a reputation for taking complex financial issues and making them understandable to non-experts.
Stan currently lives in Great Falls, Virginia, with his wife, Jayme. When they’re not spending time with their adult children and grandchildren, the couple enjoys traveling, golfing, and an occasional sail with old friends.
