About the Author: Ralph Wright, OSB
Fr. Ralph Wright, OSB is a monk of St. Louis Abbey, St. Louis, Missouri. He was born near Sherwood Forest in England where he used to go blackberrying with his brother Peter near the ammunition dumps in 1945.   As a child, Fr. Ralph kept pigeons, guinea pigs and Dutch rabbits while the family kept pigs, ponies and bees.  After high school in Yorkshire, he spent a year as an infantry officer with the Sherwood Foresters, the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire regiment, in the jungle of what was then Malaya, where he met up with snakes, mosqitoes, leeches, scorpions, great horned beetles...but no tigers.  Joining Ampleforth Abbey in Yorkshire as a monk, he was sent to study classics at Oxford, Theology in Switzerland and, after ordination in 1970, he was invited to join the Benedictine monastery at St. Louis that had been founded by Ampleforth in 1955.  In the Priory school, he has taught Latin, Greek, Creative Writing, Theology and Tennis. In the monastery, he was novicemaster for a good while and is currently vocation director.  He has had 8 books of poetry published and about sixty hymns.  He sees a good laugh as God's gift to us in our humility--a flash of contemplation.
Is WILD... a children's book? Well, yes, of course, but no...not exactly. Much of the humor will be way beyond the kids. Is it a humor book for adults? Well...maybe in an Aliceinwonderland or Doctorseussian kind of way. Is it for adolescents? Most certainly!

They'll probably remember their earlier A thru Z books and see it as partly a parody of and partly a rejoicing in the child's fresh new view of the inhabitants of our "wild" world. The truth is that WILD... is all these things and more. It is the joy and surprise of childhood blended with the wit, wisdom and--yes--the touch of cynicism of the person who has long trod the planet and knows its ways. It is both satire and innocence, beauty and ugliness, horror and delight.

It is Grimm's Fairy Tales and the Wild Life Encyclopedia. It is Jack in the Beanstalk and Brave New World. It is Australia, Tokyo, New York and London. In the WILD... alphabet, you will find Antelope through Zygote, and then, just when you think you are finished, you'll find more WILD with Puffins and Rhinos, Camels and Boas...and more. You will enjoy this book if you enjoy fish, animals and birds, but especially if you enjoy poking fun at the strange ways of the creatures on our planet, beginning, of course, always with yourself.
